Phil discovers that there are more ways the void is different than that he has experienced before. While it is darker than any of the others, not even apparently containing any features that would be common and produce even a minimal light to reach the window, that he is getting the sense that there is something out there in the darkness.
Phil finally expresses his impressions to his co-workers who reject his assumptions out of hand, and return to their usual transmissions. Phil returns to his outward gazing, trying to parse the nature of the impressions he is receiving from the inky blackness he is gazing into. But like his co-workers, the intelligence he finally contacts is interested primarily in amusing itself, and desires to use Phil as its conduit.
